Rebates
Medicare, plainly.
There is no Medicare item for an adult autism or ADHD assessment done by a psychologist. That is not our policy, it is how the schedule is written — the items were designed around children. So for most adults, a psychologist-led assessment is fully out of pocket.
There are two situations where Medicare does contribute:
The psychiatrist option, any age
Your assessment is led by a psychiatrist and billed under item 291. The rebate is $467.45. You need a referral from your GP, and it is expected to be a single attendance.
Under 25
A psychiatrist attendance under item 289 returns $272.50 and unlocks up to eight rebated allied health assessment sessions at $101.55 each — roughly $1,085 back across the process, once in a lifetime.
Rebate amounts are the current 85% benefit and change with the annual schedule update. We confirm what applies to you before you book.
What is not included
- Medication and prescriber appointments. Billed by that doctor, usually with a Medicare rebate.
- Therapy after the assessment. Separate service, separate fee.
- In-person components for cognitive testing, where a facilitator or partner room is needed. Quoted upfront.
- Rewriting your report for a different purpose months later, though we will tell you at the start how to avoid needing that.
The fee buys the assessment, not the answer. If you do not meet criteria we will tell you, explain what we think is going on, and the fee still applies. That is what an independent assessment means.
