WA has the most open GP pathway in the country
Every state controls who may start someone on stimulant medication. Western Australia's answer is currently the least restrictive, and it is worth understanding because it changes how many appointments stand between you and a settled prescription.
- Trained GPs can do the whole thing. A GP who completes WA's Specialist GP ADHD training can independently assess, diagnose and initiate stimulant treatment for patients aged 10 and over. No prior specialist diagnosis required. Compare South Australia, where the authority application needs a specialist's written report, or Victoria, where a 150-place GP program only started in September 2026.
- Shared care is the other route. A specialist initiates, your regular GP continues. Standard, and widely used.
- Routine prescribing was simplified at the end of 2024. Routine ADHD stimulant prescribing in WA no longer requires a Stimulant Prescriber Number or a notification form.
- Specialists are unchanged. Psychiatrists, paediatricians and neurologists initiate as they always have. Paediatric prescribing sits in the 4–19 band and can run to 25 where treatment began before 19.
The honest caveat is supply, not rules. A pathway existing and a trained GP having appointments near you are different things — the WA cohort has been working through training across 2026. We will tell you what is realistically available to you at intake. We are not going to imply you can walk into a GP-led script because the regulation permits one.
Why this matters more in WA than anywhere else
Western Australia is about a third of the Australian landmass with essentially all of its psychiatric workforce inside Perth. For an adult in Bunbury, Karratha or Esperance, the traditional pathway meant a wait for a Perth psychiatrist and then a trip to reach one.
Two things change that. The first is the GP pathway above. The second is that the assessment itself no longer needs to happen in Perth at all — a developmental history, standardised rating scales and a long clinical interview travel over video without losing anything material. You are assessed from your kitchen table and the report arrives the same way.
What the assessment involves
Questionnaires beforehand, at your own pace, plus a short informant section if someone who knew you as a child is willing to complete one.
Two to three hours over video with a registered psychologist, split across two sittings if that suits you better.
Differential diagnosis. Depression, anxiety, chronic sleep debt and trauma all produce something that looks like ADHD. Separating them is most of the work and the reason a fifteen-minute appointment cannot do this.
A second clinician reviews the report before release, then you get it in plain English with the reasoning shown.

Autism assessment in Perth
None of the prescribing machinery above applies to autism, because there is no medication that treats it. The WA-specific question for autism is a different one: what the report needs to contain for wherever it is going. NDIS access turns on level and documented functional impact and on who signed the report; a Western Australian university's disability service wants something else again.
Autism and ADHD also co-occur often enough that assessing one while ignoring the other is a design flaw rather than a saving.

Can a GP diagnose ADHD in Western Australia?
WA has created a pathway for it. GPs who complete the state's Specialist GP ADHD training can assess, diagnose and start stimulant treatment for patients aged 10 and over, without needing a specialist to sign off first. That is further than most states have gone. The catch is supply — the trained cohort has been building through 2026, so whether there is one taking patients near you is a separate question from whether the pathway exists.
Do I still need a psychiatrist in WA?
Not necessarily, which is unusual. Psychiatrists and paediatricians can initiate as always, and a GP on the Specialist GP pathway can too. There is also a shared-care route where a specialist starts treatment and your regular GP continues it. We will tell you which of those is realistic for you rather than assuming the most convenient one.
Is a Stimulant Prescriber Number still required?
No. WA simplified routine stimulant prescribing at the end of 2024 and routine cases no longer require a Stimulant Prescriber Number or notification. That is part of why WA's pathway is shorter than South Australia's or Victoria's.
What about age limits?
The GP pathway covers patients aged 10 and over. Paediatricians and child psychiatrists work in the 4–19 range, and can continue to 25 where treatment started before 19. Adult psychiatrists can prescribe at any age. We assess from age 12.
How much is an ADHD assessment in Perth?
$1,650 with us, including the written report, and $1,950 to assess autism and ADHD together. Perth has had some of the longest psychiatrist waits in the country for adult ADHD, which is a large part of why the GP pathway was created.
Do you cover regional WA?
Yes, and it is the case where telehealth earns its keep most obviously. Western Australia is a third of the continent with its specialist workforce almost entirely in Perth. Being assessed by video from Geraldton, Kalgoorlie or Broome removes a flight rather than a drive.
